TESTIMONY FROM THE IMPACT OF EMERGING YMCA LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE (EYLI)

TESTIMONY FROM THE IMPACT OF EMERGING YMCA LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE (EYLI)

Written by: Bethsheba Nerus

I was one of the 2021 Northern Zone EYLI participants.

A leadership training that sparked up a sense of responsibility within me towards the development of my society.

I learnt a lot in  all the sessions, activities, bible studies and other engagements at the course of the training. I vividly remember the Chairman of the Northern zone, Mr. David Faith Allu, and the Program Manager of Northern zone, Mr. Caleb Chagga Timothy, emphasizing the need for us to go back, shine the light of Christ and be part of the problem solvers in our communities and the World at large.

We were asked to be open  to other trainings, workshops and seminars that are for personal development and creating a safe space for all.

With that in mind and the recommendation of one of my Local Y member, Mr. Amin Ma'ori.

He called me to fill up a form for a program, on "Women participation in Politics and Community Development",  which was a 2 day training by Leadtot Development Initiative.

At the end of the two days, We were tasked to conduct an advocacy and commmunity development project.

God in His plans and grace took me to a community on a school trip, Kulgul community under Billiri Local Government, Gombe.

I experienced their water challenge for the 5 days i was there and how it affects the activities of the children, the health and wellbeing of the entire community.

So I began to write and post on my social media accounts to advocate for the Kulgul community as regards their challenge. I made so much noise about it, that it got attentions I desired. I was contacted and , I returned to the community to seek their consent and support.

The community leadership gave me a letter head that I use for any accountable leader i had planned to visit. The Hope Springs Foundation under the management of Hon. Rambi Ayala reached out and requested for a survey result of the community.

I went back to the community and a committee was set to raise the money for the survey which was the sum of thirty thousand naira (N30,000), The money was raised and I took back the results to Hope Springs Foundation.

They made 3 visits to the community,One was to go talk with the community, take their informations and pick a location for a borehole. The second visit was the borehole drilling and the third was to complete the work.

It took me from December 2021 to July 2022 to get the project done with alot of disappointments, frustrations, energy and supports from people around. At  the end, all I went through was worth it, because I learnt a lot through the process and I was able to help solve the problem of people in kulgul community. God be praised!
